This line etching of a horse and rider was the very first I created. I was 17 years old and in my first year at the Ontario College of Art. Our assigment was to do an etching of one of the sketches we did while at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (the world's largest indoor agricultural fair and international horse show, taking place each fall in Toronto.) I loved being there - sketching horses in their stalls, while being groomed, and especially while watching the exciting hunter/jumper competitions.

This was the only etching I did in college. The following semester I did a woodcut and then a lithograph. I don't know what became of those two prints. Etching was the technique I enjoyed most of the three I tried.

Seven years later I began my career as a printmaker, devoting my time solely to etching, though when I created this first etching I had no idea of what was to come. It's sometimes strange and usually unexpected, the path life takes us.

I came across another print of my first etching, so am making this one available.
